It is argued that, contrary to common wisdom, unbiasedness is not always a well grounded requirement. It is shown that in many cases, for a given unbiased estimator there is a simply derived biased estimator which gives results closer to the true value.

The strong coupling constant αS can be measured in deep inelastic ep scattering by employing various methods. Recent results on the extraction of αS using jet and event shape observables are presented. The results are found to be in good agreement with other more inclusive measurements and the world average value.
